Beautiful Ocean in Our Memories
Do you know how much trash is thrown in the ocean in South Korea? Every year, about 67,000 tons of trash is thrown into the ocean in South Korea alone. This is similar to the weight of 13,000 elephants. Most of this garbage is plastic. Over time, plastic breaks into small pieces, and it becomes microplastic. Sea animals can mistake microplastic for food. They can get very sick, hurt, or die. This seafood can also come back to our tables. The trash we throw away comes back to us like a boomerang.
I interviewed Hazel, a local citizen, about her experience at a beach in Busan. Last summer when she was at Haeundae Beach, she saw plastic bags, plastic bottles and glass pieces. "I miss our clean and beautiful ocean," she said. There are small actions we can take in our daily lives to help the environment, and save the ocean one day at a time. For example, we should not litter and we should practice re-using items where we can. When we save the ocean, it comes back to us just like a boomerang.
